Edinburgh

Arthur’s Seat

Translated from French by Meghan McCallum

Edinburgh is known for its Royal Mile, the main thoroughfare through the Old Town between Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle. If you want to stretch your legs on another “mile” that’s greener and gives you an unbeatable view of the city, consider hiking Arthur’s Seat!

It starts in the city at Holyrood Park (south of Holyrood Palace) and runs about one mile each way. It goes up, of course, but the incline is gradual. It’s an easy hike on a dirt path and with occasional stones (as seen in the photo). At the end you’ll climb up some rocks, which is a bit trickier, but overall this hike is really accessible. The total elevation gain is less than 700 feet.

Take your time, remember to look behind you (a good excuse for a break), and bring water! Note that there is no shade on this trail, so pack a hat and sunscreen if you’re going on a sunny day.

This trail provides an incredible view and a real breath of fresh air just outside the city center. There are tourists here, of course, but considerably fewer than in town. The trail is also very easy to access from the train station, if you happen to arrive to the city there.

After this, the Royal Mile will feel even easier!
