Vegan in Mérida

Mérida is the largest city in the Yucatán, and has many options for vegans. There are a few vegan restaurants, and many other kinds that offer vegan options. Here were my favorites, in order of preference:

Casa AüA (formerly Vegan, Inc.)

Located near the southern end of the Paseo de Montejo, Vegan, Inc. is one of those vegan restaurants where the whole menu is appealing, and you want to try everything.

As you can guess from the number of photos included here, we went back several times, and every single time it was delicious and well worth the price.

Presentation was great, taste was superb, staff was very friendly and answered all our questions.

The kind of place that makes me wish I lived in Mérida just so I could eat there all the time!

Museo de la gastronomia Yucateca

It was such a great surprise to see so many vegan options in this restaurant that specializes in specialties from the Yucatán region. Many times, while on the main plaza, I heard street vendors shout “kibis, kibis”, and here I was finally able to try the vegan version of this Lebanese inspired dish made from cracked wheat (with a habanero pepper twist for this local version).

Squash is also traditional in Yucatán and they serve a stuffed squash that was delightful.

We didn’t get to explore the museum part of it, but the outdoor patio was a beautiful setting for a beautiful meal.

Te extraño, te extraño

Located in an indoor courtyard near Parque de Santa Ana, this restaurant has two main rooms on top of outdoor seating, and really tasty vegan options.

Pictured here are the sikil pak (a traditional dip similar to hummus but made with pumpkin seeds), the “Te quiero verde” (avocado toast) and the hummus. However, the menu changes often, so check out their Instagram if you have questions before going.

Make sure to finish your meal… there are inspirational quotes on the plates underneath your food…

Marago Coffee

With several locations in town, this café offers many vegan beverages and a couple of vegan food items. If you miss peanut butter during your Mexican vacation, this is the place for you! I had the Peanut Butter toast with fruits and it hit the spot!

The Paseo de Montejo location is great for a quick breakfast before a long walk on the boulevard.

Baretto

If you’re craving a more “French” breakfast, the croissants at Baretto are vegan!

This small espresso bar is located on the corner of Calle 56 and Calle 47, has excellent coffee, and also offers a very flavorful baba ganoush salad that comes with a “pan de semillas”, a patty made from seeds. It sounds strange but it tasted very good and its crunchiness paired perfectly with the creamy baba ganoush.

Crush Mérida

For fast food lovers, this is the place! This 100% vegan restaurant has nachos but also burgers and wraps, and delicious fries!

If you go for breakfast, you can have a quesadilla or a vegan version of the traditional Mexican Breakfast dish called chilaquiles.

Located on the busy Calle 60, it’s a perfect place to recharge after having walked all day!

The drinks are tasty, and the outdoor location is very attractive. They often have concerts in the evening, so check out their Instagram page for more up-to-date info!
